Linkara Riffs: Thought for Food & Arranging a Buffet Supper

With Easter tomorrow, how about you take some time to weigh your peaches and learn how to prepare a buffet? ‎

Disarranging a Buffet Supper: Aka pretty much any Community College art class final pot luck, if they have one.

I swear it's like a Discordian buffet table, you have a cheese board from the very old students placed next to things like pizza boxes from the much younger students. But hey, it's all good.

These were both funny riffs, but I do have a bit of a complaint. Even though I am a feminist, I do not believe that home-building is a wasted life. However, since her main goal was to please her husband and she wasn't too good of a home-builder if she could plan a menu a week in advance, I'll let it slide a bit.

And nice Camelot reference.

1st vid: Gee, the early pilot for How It's Made was rough.

2 vid: Seems less about courtesy and more about OCD.

I like to imagine that the first short ended abruptly because the wife finally snapped, and burned her house down, cackling madly about peaches all the while.

You're talking about peaches, but didn't reference the classic Presidents of the United States of America song? For shame!

Frosty said...

NOOOOOO! Now we'll never know what they had for dinner!

Wait, you don't cover the table in the blood of your enemies? Why am I learning about this now! What am I going to decorate my table with now when I celebrate crushing my enemies, seeing them driven before me, and hearing the lamentations of the women?

Such a shame that the first one was incomplete. I really wanted to see what canned peaches had to do with what she was going to cook for dinner XD.

So... that housewife must be the most bored woman in the entire world if THIS is what she's sitting down to watch. Either that or she passed out after being blind drunk thanks to her husband who thinks a simply question about supper is worth starting an argument about how a house should be run .___.

To be honest Linkara, considering that my mother WAS a stay at home mother with so many health problems no one outside would have hired her even though she wanted to work... yea, seeing you make jokes about housewives being drones makes me want to reach through the net and deck you. My mother worked damn hard as a house wife and led a fulfilled life. I love how many people don't think her life could have been fulfilling or worth while because she wasn't behind a desk pushing meaningless reports for eight hours a day for a boss who didn't know her name. Because there's freaking fulfillment, right? Just because it's not the life you would have approved doesn't mean it didn't have meaning or joy. I usually enjoy your reviews, but get off your feminist high horse and realize being pro-women's choice means you support them making choices WHATEVER those choices might be. Even if it's something you don't personally like.

And just before you get back on your feminist high horse, no, I don't approve of a man complaining about what is set before him by his wife or anyone for that matter. He should be thankful. My father would be thankful if we children tried to make something and failed miserably. (We were kids, we wanted to try, though we would often eat out those days, he would still say thankyou.) The man in the short was a jerk, plain and simple.

Point out where in the riffing I attacked stay-at-home mothers or housewives. The woman in the short looked absolutely miserable, had two annoying children, and an ungrateful ass of a husband. I was also riffing on the idea that the entire goal of her life was pleasing her husband. The short was ridiculous and THAT was what I was making fun of. Please don't assume motivation beyond that.

"The modern housewife, no joy allowed"

"I don't regret my wasted life"

Because saying someone's life has no joy in association with their career choice does NOT reflect a negative attitude towards that career choice. And then, because she was living to please others, which all people should strive for in reality, her life was wasted? What I saw was a woman's life that wasn't wasted, a man who's life was a waste of oxygen and two a-typical kids (they're all ingrates, rewind to little Lewis and tell me that's not so). I'm sorry, but there's a difference between pointing out abuse by mocking the abuser, and then pointing it out by mocking the abused and anything associated with them.

Imagine if I called the life of an internet reviewer a waste and declared that there could be no joy in it. You probably would be a little peeved at the statement. Imagine I said there could be no joy in whatever your mother did and declared that her career made someone's life a waste. You'd probably want to punch my light's out.

It never ceases to amaze me the way some folks react as if a single character portrayal is supposed to represent everyone of a similar background. The whole point of this short seemed to be (I can say for sure because it ended without resolution) that certain produce provided can somehow make your whole life better. The implication of the riffing is that this women seemed to have a lot more going against her than that. It was a mocking of the EXPECTED role of the post WWII home-making woman, not the reality of all stay at home mothers at all times!

Torkuda said...

Declaring that someones life is a waste (Which still needs explaining even under pre WWII conditions, thankyou very much women's lives were not wasted back then any more than were men's lives. To waste ones life means it has no value to anyone but yourself if even that, not that your served others above yourself.) or that it can have no joy because of their career choice when their career choice is actually part of freaking nature... Folks don't need to swoop in and defend Linkara like he's a child though I'm sure a bunch of people will. He said what he said and it sounded how it sounded. In my book he does not get brownie points for intending something else.

I still like him as an entertainer and still think of him as probably the smartest guy on channel awesome and will continue to watch his show. All I did was say his riffing pissed me off. If he doesn't want to apologize, fine. His reputation can take some guy somewhere in America being upset with him. He must not feel too insulted as he allowed the comment to be posted after reading it.

I must admit even as I'd finished posting my last comment, it occurred to me that I my not have been very clear. I did think his choice of words were a little insensitive and I could see why you take offense. And I do believe domestic roles for women in this country from the Post WWI rise in American middle class living up through the early cold war years are too often stero-typed and misunderstood. My only point was that I believe Linkara was only making fun of this PARTICULAR situation in this PARTICULAR short, which I now see from further research acutely came out in the 1930s. There was no indication that ALL housewives were miserable, at least not to me. Still, I admit it was rather poorly phrased.

Guys, Linkara did not attack the housewife's lifestyle because he meant disrespect to it. You saw how miserable she was being the homemaker. If you spend your life being an unappreciated homemaker (or internet reviewer or anything else), with lots of unnecessary arguments and generally ungrateful people around you, you will begin to question if anything you do is worth it. She looked like she didn't enjoy her home (look at her expression at the very beginning of the short), and Linkara's comment "no joy allowed" reflected that. She may or may not have the capacity to do something else, her society might or might not have certain expectations of her, doesn't matter in this case because we are not talking about her career choices, we are talking about her misery in serving these generally ungrateful people.

I do wonder why the first one was left unfinished

"I do wonder why the first one was left unfinished"

It's likely that since it's about 80 or so years old, the other half of the film had degraded to the point where it was incapable of being salvaged or just that the reel had been cut at some point and wasn't able to be located.

Unexpected riff session but fun. Seeing canned food in black and white adds its own level of humor, if unintentional since that was all that was available at the time.
